It was a beautiful summer morning and I was on my way to Calgary to move in the new renters into our condo. I left home around 7am and I was having a nice peaceful drive north.
As I was driving the road toward Granum there was a truck in front of me and he had stuff flying out of the bed of his truck. I slammed on my breaks and all my work files and rental files went flying. I managed to dodge the debris on the road and kept on going.
As I continued my drive I started picking up things on the ground that had fallen from my sudden stop. A little thought in my head kept telling me to pull over and pick it all up then get back on the road. Well, I didn't listen to the prompting. As I was reaching for my last item my knee hit the steering wheel and I was immediately yanked into on coming traffic and into the ditch I went. I went through a fence and then came back out another fence. My car didn't roll thankfully, nor did I hit anyone else. All I remember is telling myself "hold on Carmen, you can pull out of this"
The car finally came to a stop. I sat in my seat, examined myself to make sure I was ok and then I got out to assess the damages. Another car stopped to see if I was ok. I walked around the car and it was in pretty rough shape. I think every panel on the car needed to be replaced.
I got back in the car and kept driving to Calgary. I had to get there as we had renters waiting for me. As I started back on the road to Calgary I didn't get very far as there was a lot of scrapping and noise coming from the bottom of the car. I did manage to get back to Lethbridge though.
What a scary experience. One that I will never forget. Things can happen so fast when you are behind the wheel and a simple distraction can cause so much damage. I was grateful that I wasn't really hurt and that I walked way from the accident without major injuries. I was mad at myself for making such a silly mistake and also not listening to the prompting I had to just pull over. I guess every trial or mistake we make in life is a test and from every test results in a consequences either good or bad.
Here are a few pictures of the old and new car.
Goodbye Chevy Cruz and Hello Buick Regal.
